Phase I

Located in the South Texas Medical Center, dgd Research's Phase I Clinical Pharmacology Unit (CPU) is housed in a park-like setting adjacent to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital and the Diabetes & Glandular Disease Clinic. The 32,500 sq.ft. facility can comfortably house 75 overnight study participants while also providing outpatient research services. Each semi-private room includes individual closets and a restroom. Our CPU also has several patient activity and leisure areas as well as a separate visitor area. The CPU will soon be expanded to a new 80,000 sq. ft., 100 bed state-of-the-art research facility.

Phase I/CPU studies have included healthy participants as well as patients diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, hyperlipidemia, liver and renal insufficiency, osteoporosis, hypothyroid, and neuropathy. Our CPU is ranked first choice for Phase I endocrine/metabolic studies by leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies because we offer the following:

  • Professionally licensed (RN, LVN) Clinical Research Coordinators highly experienced in performing insulin and glycemic clamp procedures, pharmacokinetic/ pharmacodynamic sampling, dose tolerance escalations, and calorimetry.
  • 24-hour staffing to provide quality patient care and protocol adherence.
  • Dedicated on-site Research Physician and Nurse Practitioners.
  • ATOMIC clocks strategically located throughout the building to ensure accurate event timing.
  • CLIA-accredited laboratory complete with five Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI) and -70°C freezers.
  • Camera-monitored research kitchen, managed by Registered Dieticians, prepares ADA-approved study-specific meals.
  • Pharmacy services including two contract pharmacists and medication nurses as well as a locked drug storage, metabolic hood, and medication room.
  • Recruiting department with exclusive database access to over 55,000 patients from the Diabetes & Glandular Disease Clinic-the largest endocrinology practice in the United States.
